UPDATE: IRS nonprofits website is in error, Healdsburg groups say

Errors are found in a nationally published IRS spreadsheet listing 275,000 nonprofits who have had their nonprofits privileges stripped for failure to complete required annual paperwork three years running.

Ed. note: This article was corrected and updated on June 10, 2011.  Healdsburg Patch is investigating the accuracy of the IRS spreadsheet mentioned in this article, which listed 26 Healdsburg nonprofits as losing their nonprofit status, including the and Healdsburg Hospital Foundation.

A Healdsburg Youth Soccer League  spokeswoman said today that HYSL's nonprofit status was intact, up-to-date and in order, and that the IRS spreadsheet  was in error (See comments below).

Additionally, a link in the original Patch article relating to the Healdsburg Hospital Foundation was also in error. A spokesman for the Heathcare Foundation of Northern Sonoma County said there was no connection between his organization and the now-defunct Healdsburg Hospital Foundation.

"The Healthcare Foundation Northern Sonoma County (HFNSC) is an independent non-profit Foundation with an intact and up to date IRS 501 C (3) designation," said Rick Ventura, HFNSC executive director. "The HFNSC is NOT the defunct Healdsburg Hospital Foundation, nor is the HFNSC affiliated with the Healdsburg District Hospital."

An article listing  Healdsburg organizations that have been stripped of their non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service has been corrected, and Healdsburg Patch is investigating whether the IRS website included in the article is in error.

According to the IRS, a total of 275,000 groups nationwide “have had their federal tax-exempt status automatically revoked for failing to file an annual information return or notice with the IRS for three consecutive years.”

That action “shrinks the nation’s growing nonprofit sector by roughly 17 percent, to about 1.3 million charities, trade associations, membership groups and labor unions,” wrote Stephanie Strom in the New York Times.
