Jim Vogt, Former Healdsburg High Teacher, Dies at 100

He was early president of Healdsburg Active 20-30 Club.

 

Jim Vogt, a longtime teacher and former president of the died Friday at the age of 100.

"He passed away peacefully in his home on Friday morning, May 4, at 8 a.m.," said his daughter Colleen Estill of Santa Rosa. "He will be greatly missed."

Vogt was a major golf enthusiast and was active in at the Healdsburg club when he and his late wife Stella and family lived and worked in town. Vogt taught physics and chemistry at Healdsburg High for 23 years.

Chapin said at the time it was an honor to meet Vogt and to be able to have a window into decades of Healdsburg history.

Born on Nov. 26, 1911 in Foxholm, North Dakota, Vogt grew up in Nebraska and received his bachelor's degree and teaching credentials in 1936 from what is now Chadron State College in Nebraska. He began teaching in Martin, South Dakota, where he met his wife Stella.

In 1943, the couple, who by then had two boys, Ted and Paul, moved to Healdsburg, where Vogt taught from 1943 to 1966. Estill was born during the time in Healdsburg. Vogt continued his education, receiving a master's degree in chemistry in 1961 from what is now the University of the Pacific.

In 1972, the family moved to Santa Rosa. Vogt taught physical science and astronomy at Santa Rosa Junior College from 1966 to 1976.

Vogt was preceded in death by his wife Stella in 1999. He is survived by his daughter Estill and sons Ted and Paul Vogt.

Estill said services for her father will be Friday, May 11 at noon at Resurrection Parish, 303 Stony Point Rd., Santa Rosa, followed by a reception. Internment will be at 3 p.m. at the Shiloh Annex.

There will also be a visitation at Eggen and Lance chapel on Thursday evening from 4-8 p.m. and a rosary at 6 or 7 p.m. Details on the rosary will be confirmed later.
