The Shed Opens Its Doors

New boutique café, market and gathering place opens at 25 North St.

Owners Cindy Daniel and Doug Lipton raised the barn-like doors at of the new Healdsburg Shed yesterday morning, Tuesday at 7 a.m.

Daniel and Lipton see what they call "SHED" as a modern grange, a place where people come together to share food and ideas.

Using vinegar as an example of SHED’s integrated approach, Daniel says, “We will make our own vinegar, use it to prepare our café and to-go food, and sell it from our pantry.

"We’ll also present workshops to teach you to make your own vinegar at home," she adds.  "And we’ll have the traditional tool - a vinegar crock - available for purchase.” Daniel designs and leads SHED’s educational programs.

The market, located on the first floor, offers a larder, pantry, produce and flowers, and tried and true tools for the kitchen and garden. The larder has food-to-go; the pantry has provisions such as oils and preserves selected for quality and taste.

Shed’s seasonally-driven café, featuring a wood oven, is open seven days a week with a menu specializing in dishes featuring local ingredients from the region’s farms. Shed serves breakfast and lunch as well as special plates to complement the beverages - wine, beer, natural soda and kombucha - available on tap at the fermentation bar.

On the second floor, the 2,750-square-foot "Grange" strives to become a community center for learning, offering talks and workshops on food crafts, gardening, farming and sustainable living.

The public events get started as earlly as this weekend: On April 20, Deborah Madison will present her book, Vegetable Literacy, in conversation with Michele Anna Jordan.

The Grange will kick off its Sunday Supper series on April 28 with an event paying tribute to a local family: the Berniers who farm sustainably in Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys.

The Grange meeting room, terrace, balcony and SHED’s kitchen are available for private events. Booking information is available at www.HealdsburgShed.com.
