Special 'Colby Red' Theme to Kick off 'Tuesday Concerts in the Plaza'

Makers of nationally famous red wine are one of prime event sponsors.

A new, heart-healthy wrinkle has been added to the first of Healdsburg's “Tuesdays in the Plaza” concert series on May 29. One of the prime sponsors of the series will hold a special event at the opening concert, which features Los Pinguos, an all-male band originally from Argentina, playing a mix of Latin rhythms. To see a lineup of all the bands, click here. Concerts start at 6 p.m. The premium sponsor in question is Colby Red Wine. Colby Red Wine has been featured on the Today Show four times  in the last 12 months. The wine was inspired and initiated by Colby Groom, who at the ages of 8 and 9 underwent back-to-back open heart surgeries. Profits from the wine support charities across the USA and Canada that promote heart health. …

Healdsburg Karaoke Resurrected

Former Johnny's Off the Plaza owner now has gig at Frank & Ernie's.

Healdsburg's nightlife is getting a new shot in the arm these days from John Gavello, former owner of Johnny's Off the Plaza. With the closure of Johnny's Off the Plaza earlier this year, Healdsburg lost one of its main sites for karaoke. Gavello said Monday he is now running a karaoke night on Thursday's at Healdsburg's Frank & Ernie's Steak House. "The restaurant is hosting us, starting around 9:30 p.m.," Gavello said. There is no cover charge for the karaoke night, which started a few weeks ago, he added. Due to regulations, the new karaoke night is not for all ages, as was the one at Johnny's Off the Plaza, he added. Frank & Ernie's, which has cleared out several dining booths to add a small stage area, is also planning to add a …

How Are You Spending Memorial Day Weekend in Healdsburg?

Let us know your favorite barbecue, picnic or event.

Note: This story was updated on Tuesday, May 15. Last week, we had some really great suggestions on places to show off Healdsburg to visitors or to do staycations. This week, we ask for your top choices for Memorial Day activities in Healdsburg -- and that may include some of the same parks and other spots. But because of the holiday weekend, is there is even more incentive for an annual barbecue, picnic or other outing that makes the weekend extra-special? If so, tell us in the comments. Memorial Day this year is Monday, May 28 -- and the weekend of  May 26-27 is included in the three-day holiday. Memorial Day is a special weekend in Healdsburg as the American Legion Post #111 always has a solemn ceremony to remember the fallen. But what …

'Beautiful River, Beautiful Day -- Rave Reviews!"

More than 400 racers, 700 total attendees at Great Russian River Race.

An amazing 407 canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard racers took to the river Saturday for the Second Annual Great Russian River Race. "That's about 70 percent more than last year, when we had 251 racers," said Russian Riverkeeper Don McEnhill, one of the organizers. "We had 35 sign up first thing this morning." McEnhill said a buzz spread in the paddling community after the inaugural event last year.  "What this race is really about is building community around the Russian River," said race director Tony Hansen. "This is a world-class river; it's one of the best to paddle in the world." Hansen said he was thrilled with the day's success. "Beautiful river, beautiful day -- and rave reviews from our sponsors," Hansen said. At least 70 …

Readers Choices for staycations, places to take visitors.

Healdsburg-area parks, trails and public places like Healdsburg Plaza won out in this week's Readers Choice contest for "Best Healdsburg Destination Spots." Of course there were suggestions for food and dining, as well as a number of votes for the Healdsburg Farmers' Market. Click here to see the original story with all the suggestions and votes. More Healdsburg Cyclists Bike to Work

Bike to Work Day numbers up over last year.

By all accounts, Thursday's Sonoma County Bike to Work Day was even more successful than last year. "We tallied 42 people participating," said Angela Allen of the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, where one of 30 "energizer" stations in the county was set up this morning. "Of those, 30 stopped at the station and got a [Bike to Work] bag, and 12 were participating but they didn't pick up a bag," Allen said. According to the Press Democrat, those numbers are way up from last year, when only eight bicyclists participated from Healdsburg. Click here to read the Press Democrat story.

Life in (Healdsburg's) Slow Lane an Outside Magazine Fantasy Spread

Local athlete-foodies now national models for the hip, healthy life.

It's become almost commonplace for Healdsburg to be featured in bicycling magazines as a ground zero destination. The same is true, perhaps for wine tasting aficionado journals -- and some regional or even national foodie rags. But the June edition of Outside Magazine trumps all previous claims to fame for our lovely little town. Inside its pages is a six-page spread that has fit local folks showing off the latest in upscale casual wear a la L.L. Bean or Levi's and raving about the triple-threat pleasures of Healdsburg: the biking, the food and the wine. The synopsis for the article, entitled "Life in the Slow Lane" and written by Michael Roberts, tells it all: "An hour and a half north of San Francisco, the small town of Healdsburg …
