Makers of nationally famous red wine are one of prime event sponsors.
A new, heart-healthy wrinkle has been added to the first of Healdsburg's “Tuesdays in the Plaza” concert series on May 29. One of the prime sponsors of the series will hold a special event at the opening concert, which features Los Pinguos, an all-male band originally from Argentina, playing a mix of Latin rhythms. To see a lineup of all the bands, click here. Concerts start at 6 p.m. The premium sponsor in question is Colby Red Wine. Colby Red Wine has been featured on the Today Show four times in the last 12 months. The wine was inspired and initiated by Colby Groom, who at the ages of 8 and 9 underwent back-to-back open heart surgeries. Profits from the wine support charities across the USA and Canada that promote heart health. …

Long-time journalist and broadcasting trailblazer Millie Howie honored.
The Healdsburg Library Forum Room offered standing room only as more than 60 people crowded in to celebrate the life of Millie Howie. Huffman considered favorite in 12-candidate race.
Note: This article was updated on Monday, May 14, and again on Wednesday, May 16, and Thursday, May 17. Correct number of candidates is 12, not 11. As we reported last month in Patch, the 2nd District North Coast Congressional race started out strong and has continued to build in intensity. Voters in the June 5 primary election will narrow the field of 12 candidates down to the top two, who will then compete in the November general elections to represent the 2nd District in Congress. With the same three Democratic contenders continuing to be the favorites in Sonoma County -- State Assemblyman Jared Huffman, entrepreneur Stacey Lawson and peace activist Norman Solomon -- county Democratic Party leaders have declined to endorse any one …

Parade is Thursday, May 24.
Healdsburg Police issued an alert Tuesday to what they called "challenges associated with the annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and Parade." "This community celebration occurs over the Memorial Day weekend," said Healdsburg Police Lt. Kevin Young in a statement. "Festivities start with a parade through the downtown area on Thursday May 24 starting at 6 p.m. "The associated street closures begin at 5:30 p.m.," he added. "Vehicle access into the downtown area will be restricted for a minimum of two hours." Young encouraged drivers to select alternate routes to avoid the parade activity. After the parade, the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair continues through Sunday at Recreation Park. This year's theme is "Cowboy Boots …
Former Johnny's Off the Plaza owner now has gig at Frank & Ernie's.
Healdsburg's nightlife is getting a new shot in the arm these days from John Gavello, former owner of Johnny's Off the Plaza. With the closure of Johnny's Off the Plaza earlier this year, Healdsburg lost one of its main sites for karaoke. Gavello said Monday he is now running a karaoke night on Thursday's at Healdsburg's Frank & Ernie's Steak House. "The restaurant is hosting us, starting around 9:30 p.m.," Gavello said. There is no cover charge for the karaoke night, which started a few weeks ago, he added. Due to regulations, the new karaoke night is not for all ages, as was the one at Johnny's Off the Plaza, he added. Frank & Ernie's, which has cleared out several dining booths to add a small stage area, is also planning to add a …

News not great at budget workshop Monday.
Healdsburg's first 2012-13 budget workshop Monday put a new possible damper on an already subdued fiscal outlook. In addition to the $984,000 deficit in the $7 million general fund at the end of the 2011-12 fiscal year, the city now could face a loss of about $600,000 in redevelopment administrative costs, according to an article in the Press Democrat. Even though redevelopment agencies were dissolved in the state earlier this year, Healdsburg's Oversight Board has been applying to the state Department of Finance to complete the projects already identified in the city's former redevelopment fund program. At the first Oversight Board meeting in April, board members agreed to request the state cover $250,000 in administrative costs instead…

Second stage starts in San Francisco.
Cyclist Peter Sagan is in the lead as the Amgen Tour of California moves to San Francisco today for its second stage. The Slovakian-born Sagan, riding for the team Liquigas-Cannondale, finished first in the annual race's first stage in Sonoma County on Sunday with a time of 4 hours, 42 minutes and 25 seconds. The 119.6-mile stage began and ended in Santa Rosa and traveled through the hills of western Sonoma County. The 117.1-mile second stage will begin at San Francisco's Marina Green at 11 a.m. and travel south on state Highway 1 through San Mateo County and ending in Aptos in Santa Cruz County, according to race organizers.
