Concerts in the Plaza

Special 'Colby Red' Theme to Kick off 'Tuesday Concerts in the Plaza'

Makers of nationally famous red wine are one of prime event sponsors.

A new, heart-healthy wrinkle has been added to the first of Healdsburg's “Tuesdays in the Plaza” concert series on May 29. One of the prime sponsors of the series will hold a special event at the opening concert, which features Los Pinguos, an all-male band originally from Argentina, playing a mix of Latin rhythms. To see a lineup of all the bands, click here. Concerts start at 6 p.m. The premium sponsor in question is Colby Red Wine. Colby Red Wine has been featured on the Today Show four times  in the last 12 months. The wine was inspired and initiated by Colby Groom, who at the ages of 8 and 9 underwent back-to-back open heart surgeries. Profits from the wine support charities across the USA and Canada that promote heart health. …

UPDATE: Videos Added of Millie Howie Ceremony

Long-time journalist and broadcasting trailblazer Millie Howie honored.

The Healdsburg Library Forum Room offered standing room only as more than 60 people crowded in to celebrate the life of Millie Howie. In addition, the Sonoma County Wine Library was rededicated in honor of Howie. Howie, a well-known wine journalist and founder of the wine library, passed away Apr. 5, 2011.    “The Sonoma County Wine Library, Millie Howie, Founder,” is the new appellation of the library, housed inside the Healdsburg Branch of the library. Seven speakers eulogized Howie, each covering a portion of her life’s work. Rev. Marvin Bowers provided opening and closing remarks. Ted Stier, Rutgers University professor and dean emeritus, spoke of her work with the Wine Library Associates. He described Howie as "organized, reliable …

Elections 2012

POLL: 3 Candidates Garner Over 2,000 Nods For Congress on June 5

Huffman considered favorite in 12-candidate race.

Note: This article was updated on Monday, May 14, and again on Wednesday, May 16, and Thursday, May 17. Correct number of candidates is 12, not 11. As we reported last month in Patch, the 2nd District North Coast Congressional race started out strong and has continued to build in intensity. Voters in the June 5 primary election will narrow the field of 12 candidates down to the top two, who will then compete in the November general elections to represent the 2nd District in Congress. With the same three Democratic contenders continuing to be the favorites in Sonoma County -- State Assemblyman Jared Huffman, entrepreneur Stacey Lawson and peace activist Norman Solomon -- county Democratic Party leaders have declined to endorse any one …

State Considering Charging for Beach Access

Wants to install self-pay stations at many Sonoma County beaches to raise revenues for state parks

Facing a $33 million budget shortfall, the state parks department wants to charge visitors at some Sonoma County beaches $8 a day to park their vehicles, prompting a flurry of criticism from those who say that access to the coast should be free and open to all. The state agency is focusing on Goat Rock in Jenner, Bodega Head, Salt Point State Park, Stump Beach, Portuguese Beach and several others beaches, according to an article in Tuesday’s Press Democrat. The move is aimed at closing the budget shortfall and generating revenue for park operations and maintenance, according to the Press Democrat. But opponents, including veterans of the "Free Our Beaches" protests in the early 1990s, argue that charging for parking could limit access to …

Healdsburg Police Warn of Traffic, Alcohol 'Challenges' at Future Farmers Parade

Parade is Thursday, May 24.

Healdsburg Police issued an alert Tuesday to what they called "challenges associated with the annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and Parade."  "This community celebration occurs over the Memorial Day weekend," said Healdsburg Police Lt. Kevin Young in a statement. "Festivities start with a parade through the downtown area on Thursday May 24 starting at 6 p.m. "The associated street closures begin at 5:30 p.m.," he added.  "Vehicle access into the downtown area will be restricted for a minimum of two hours." Young encouraged drivers to select alternate routes to avoid the parade activity. After the parade, the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair continues through Sunday at Recreation Park. This year's theme is "Cowboy Boots …

New Tab for Healdsburg Redevelopment Losses: $600,000

News not great at budget workshop Monday.

Healdsburg's first 2012-13 budget workshop Monday put a new possible damper on an already subdued fiscal outlook. In addition to the $984,000 deficit in the $7 million general fund at the end of the 2011-12 fiscal year, the city now could face a loss of about $600,000 in redevelopment administrative costs, according to an article in the Press Democrat. Even though redevelopment agencies were dissolved in the state earlier this year, Healdsburg's Oversight Board has been applying to the state Department of Finance to complete the projects already identified in the city's former redevelopment fund program. At the first Oversight Board meeting in April, board members agreed to request the state cover $250,000 in administrative costs instead…

First Healdsburg Budget Workshop is Tonight

Numbers for each department to be discussed.

Healdsburg will begin its budget breakdown tonight in the first of a series of budget workshops starting at 6 p.m. at Healdsburg City Hall. According to City Manager Marjie Pettus, the agenda will include some proposed numbers for each department and a detailed discussion for the Community Services and Electric departments. "This is the first workshop where we will be presenting the proposed department budgets and will be talking about numbers," Pettus said. "We have had prior sessions to discuss core services, pension options and whether or not we’ll proceed with a ballot initiative," she added. "Those meetings have referenced budget but did not include detailed discussion of the 2012-13 budget." "As for the draft budget, it will come …

Thumbs Down on Downtown Street Parking Meters -- Lots Maybe OK

Residents, business owners not in favor of paid street parking.

Healdsburg business owners and residents said Thursday they didn't agree with a city proposal to add paid parking on downtown streets around Healdsburg Plaza. However, they said that adding meters or kiosks on the free parking lots off the Plaza might be an acceptable alternative to help raise money for the cash-strapped city general fund budget. Healdsburg Police Cpl. Tanya Potter told about 45 people at a town hall meeting at Healdsburg City Hall that a system of 30 to 35 high-tech parking kiosks could cover 395 parking spaces around the Plaza and generate up to $500,000 annually -- a potential salve for an estimated $1 million deficit in the general fund for 2012-13. Fees would likely be in the range of $1 per hour, but could be …

Hey ya! What about that dormant lot by B of A?
