Earth Day in and around Healdsburg

The Plaza will show its true colors on Saturday, but if you want to explore further, they've got Jared Diamond in Graton, the traditional Apple Blossom Parade in Sebastopol and they're painting the Town Green green in Windsor.

On Saturday, April 20, Healdsburg will celebrate Earth Day in the Plaza, once again presented by the Progressive Club of Healdsburg High. This family-friendly free event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will feature information booths, environmental projects and 20 acts on stage, including speakers from the community, professional and student bands, and the dynamic dance troop the Studio Gray Dancers.

Over 30 booths will be set up throughout the Plaza staffed by environmental, justice, and community organizations. “Mother Earth” will preside over Mother Earth’s Children’s Garden where little ones (and big ones, too) can get their faces painted and enjoy age-appropriate activities. There will be an art show featuring high school students and other local artists, a bake sale, and more.

Speakers embracing both environmental and social justice causes include Project Censored's Dr. Andy Lee Roth, Fair Trade Healdsburg's Ray Ballestero, Supervisor Mike McGuire, the Committee for Immigrant Rights, Climate Protection Campaign, and the Russian RiverKeepers.

Down in Windsor, they’re celebrating their Earth Day and Wellness Festival on Sunday the 21st. It’s on the Town Green from 11 to 3, and is free. As well as the usual, there is a Green Rummage Sale sponsored by the Windsor Garden Club, and a Youth Bike Rodeo.

“We invite you to walk, bike or car-pool and to minimize use of disposables and to recycle,” reminds Windsor’s Parks & Recreation Director Donna Legge. So they’ll have “bicycle valet parking” service run by Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition.

In Graton,  the Iron Horse Winery will have their annual Earth Day get-together on Sunday, April 21, with their own delicious champagnes and wines from the other Green Valley appellation wineries. Special guest is Jared Diamond, author of The World Until Yesterday, Collapse and the seminal Guns, Germs and Steel. Proceeds (it’s $50) go to National Geographic. More info here.

In Sebastopol it’s time for a tradition that pre-dates Earth Day (only founded in 1970) – the 67th Annual Apple Blossom Festival and Parade. The parade route at 10:00 a.m. at Analy High School and continues until noon, and/or go to Ives Park and the Sebastopol Memorial Auditorium, for the festival, from 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. They’ll also have bicycle valet parking by Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition. $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, kids under ten free. More info here.

Headed north to Hopland, the Real Goods Store is having their annual Earth Day Celebration, at the Solar Living Institute (13771 S. Hwy. 101). It's on the south end of town, just as you're entering Hopland - look for the big solar array on the right. Wine tasting, healthy food, green activities for green kids, and hands-on education of sustainable practices. 12 - 6 pm, free. (Rep. Jared Huffman will be stopping by, too.)
