Today's Tsunami Warning Is a TEST, Only a Test ...

No need for alarm in Sonoma County ...

By Bay City News Service

Sonoma County residents will hear airborne public messages warning of a tsunami today as part of local communications systems, county officials said. A Civil Air Patrol aircraft will fly over the Sonoma County coastline between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. testing the airborne public address system.

The system should provide residents with information on where to provide feedback on the test, according to Zachary Hamill, emergency coordinator for the county Fire and Emergency Services Department.

The test, which is being conducted in cooperation with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, the state Office of Emergency Services and local coastal agencies, will also include the Telephone Emergency Notification System.

The aircraft will also fly over Del Norte, Humboldt and Marin counties, officials said.

The test is dependent on weather, and will be cancelled if there is excessive seismic activity in the 24 hours prior to the test, to avoid confusion with real tsunami warnings, officials said.
