Raven Theater is venue for Friday's opening night of Healdsburg Jazz Festival

Pianist Fred Hersch and guitarist Julian Lage, both with Healdsburg connections, to perform at 8 p.m. event. Also on the bill is Noam Lemish Trio.

Healdsburg Jazz Festival's Opening Night concert is just a couple days away, and surprisingly there are still tickets left.

Pianist Fred Hersch has fully recovered from a health crisis just a couple years ago, and will play selections of music written as a result from his multimedia production, “My Coma Dreams.”

He will be joined by guitarist Julian Lage, who like Hersch has local connections to Healdsburg, and has been a frequent festival performer since he was 12. Both artists will perform both solo and with each other in a rare meeting of extraordinary talent.

Special Announcement: Meanwhile, what can most charitably be described as “unseasonable weather” has led us to this weekend, formerly scheduled for Rec Park, to an indoor venue. Both “One Voice: An Afternoon of Vocal Jazz,” (Saturday June 4 from 4p.m. to 8p.m.) and “Latin Jazz on the Green,”! (Sunday, June 5 from 1 p.m. to 6p.m.) will now be held at the Sonoma County Day School’s Jackson Theater, an indoor venue at 4400 Day School Pl., Santa Rosa, not far from the Sonoma County Airport.

“We really didn’t want to have to make a change at such a late date,” said Jessica Felix, founder and artistic director of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. “But when we looked at the weather report and considered that there might be a lot of unhappy people there, we decided we had to give them the best possible alternative to enjoy this great music.”

The Healdsburg Jazz Festival has put on events and performances at the Jackson Theater in the past, including Dave Brubeck, Charles Lloyd, and others.

“The fact that we can make this change is very, very fortunate,” continued Felix. “The Jackson Theater is such a great venue for music, it’s a miracle that it’s available to us both these days. I’m sure our ticket holders will be more than pleased, and by moving indoors we’ll have a lot of quality seating available.”

Current ticket holders will be honored for both events, with the “Tables and Umbrella Area” holders converted to “Gold Circle” seating near the front of the stage. This means the general price of admission, $25, is a remarkable deal for concerts of this quality in a venue as sophisticated as the Jackson Theater. Tickets will continue to be sold at the published rate until they are sold out.
