Western Music to Swing in the Plaza Tonight

What a difference a week makes. Last Tuesday it was raining, cool, and the Tuesday Concert in the Plaza was cancelled. This week – well, now we are all too familiar with 100-degree days.

It may be hot, but it’s not too hot to cancel the concert this week.

Taking the stage at 6 p.m. this Fourth of July week will be Tommy Thomsen and his band, a half-dozen Western swingers based in Sonoma County. This is more than just a local country band: Western Swing is a hybrid of jazz, blues, honky-tonk, square dance and cowboy songs, born in the 1930s and still going strong today.  Think boogie-woogie meets hoe-down, and you’ve got the general idea.

If that ain’t dance music, I don’t know what is.

Thomsen has made it a point to look up and play with the members of the greatest Western Swing band ever, Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys. That association may have helped land him in the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in Sacramento, the Pioneers of Western Swing Hall of Fame in Seattle, and the Western Swing Society of the Southwest in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Food vendors will be on hand, located on Plaza Street side of the Plaza, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. These include Healdsburg Charcuterie, diVine Pizza, Mateo’s Cocina Latina, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Sizzling Tandoor, Taverna Sofia and The Wurst, all offering a wide variety of food.
