American Legion Crab Feed Sold Out Again

What is your crab feed eating technique?

On Saturday, Feb. 5, from 4-7 p.m., held their annual crab feed at in Healdsburg.

This is a great annual event the post has been putting on for over 30 years. The monies raised go towards the payment of the spectacular fireworks display the Legion puts on every year at .

“I think that we have put it on about as long as we have done the fireworks, we got the bill for the first fireworks show and realized we need some help from the community so we can help the community,” said Lorraine Plass of the American Legion.

“This is one of the longest running feeds of this type in the county," added Ed Leon of the Legion. "We have sold out 600 tickets as usual.

"We will have 2,500 pounds of those wonderful fresh crabs coming in Saturday morning," Leon said. "What is great about this feed is that we have kept the cost down and the focus is on eating crab.

"We will have garlic bread and salad with Louie dressing," he added. "Beer and wine are included as well as a no-host bar.

"This feed is like old home week for a lot of the people that come," Leon said. "Everybody wins.”

Leon also mentioned that a portion of the money goes towards scholarships for the boys learning program -- a leadership retreat for young men.

There are many different techniques that the semi-pro crab eaters use to get their fill of our North Coast delicacy, Dungeness Crab:

The Rookies -- They show up ready to just nibble away as much as they can.

The Power Eaters -- They show up with their stomachs pre-stretched for optimum performance. Some have little tool belts with a variety of picks to get the meat out. Others have special crackers for that high performance speed cracking. (click on video arrow to some of Healdsburg’s “Power Crab Eaters”).

The Team Players -- They break down the chores. One person selects the best crab from the bowl, one person cracks, two people pick. When there's enough, everybody eats.

The Eat as You Go -- Some people eat as they go.

The Clean and Stock Pilers -- Enough said.
