Best Bets for Mother's Day Brunch

With all the great restaurants in Healdsburg, if your Mom's in town, you have no reason to eat breakfast at home on Sunday.

Whether your mother comes to visit or lives in town -- or has passed on, but remains in your heart -- Mother’s Day Brunch is a nice way to spend a May afternoon. Some people scoff at Mother's Day, calling it a "Hallmark Holiday," and while we won't argue with that we do think that fond memories are built around tradition, and Mother's Day Brunch is one of the better ones.

Following our article of a few weeks ago, here's a list of places that are doing something special this weekend for the holiday. Reservations are recommended in nearly all cases, so their phone number and address are included here.

Affronti’s Sunday Brunch runs from 10:30 to 4pm, but be sure to get there between 11 and 2, when the Kevin Durkin Trio lays down some mellow jazz in the Courtyard. Make reservations accordingly. Brunch menu includes Berry-Chestnut Clafouti (kind of like a tart), Salmon Benedict, Duck & Potato Hash among other dishes from Jude Affronti’s kitchen.

With its artsy décor and outside dining, Barndiva is the sort of place Mother would love if she’s artsy and outdoorsy. Brunch begins at 11am on Sunday, with Sonoma Duck Hash (is this a local favorite?), Dungeness Crab Omelet, Creekstone Farms Ribeye and Eggs with Sauce Béarnaise (tops out at $30), or the ever-reliable Eggs Benny. Ryan Fancher rules in the kitchen. Front patio has been remodeled, back patio opens Memorial Day weekend.

Gotta love a place whose mimosas are made with organic orange juice and Piper Sonoma Brut. Most brunches are $13 (a deal) and include Eggs over Red Flannel Hash (made with beets), Eggs Over Smoked Salmon with Sauce Béarnaise, or Eggs Over Creamy Goat Cheese Polenta. No eggs? Try the Ricotta Souffle Pancakes. All this plus a Plaza view too from Ralph Tingle and friends.

The local house of Charlie Palmer’s food empire offers brunch from 11 to 2pm. The menu is a 3-course craft-your-own affair at $49… let’s see, Chilled Lobster Salad, Pan Roasted Filet Mignon with Peach and Honey Shortcake to finish? They also have a Mother’s Day Dinner menu, which looks equally haute. Both are online at their website.

tucked away off Healdsburg Ave, and they oblige with three special brunch items on Mother’s Day: Huevos Rancheros, Steak and Eggs and an Eggs Benedict. If you can wait till 5pm, they’ll bring out the Prime Rib. Momma loves her meat! Sunday hours are 11:30 am – 9pm.

Don’t get up early on Sunday (what a concept!), but wait for afternoon to feast at Madrona Manor, at the intersection of Westside Rd. and West Dry Creek. From 1pm on they’ll have a Mother’s Day menu with special egg dishes including a Sausage Scramble (in chef Jeff Mallgren’s hands that’s probably better than it sounds) as well as more Sunday dinner-type items. Right now reservations are going fast: mid-afternoon is your best bet.

Ravenous is that homey place across from the Raven Film Center, probably the sort of place your mother grew up in (with better food). Brunch is 11 – 2:30 on Sunday, but in keeping with their philosophy of No Menu Before It’s Time they will decide on the offerings that morning to assure freshness. Call for reservations and take the plunge – request dining on the back patio, it’ll be a nice day.

“Edgy and bold” says about this restaurant, but take Mamma anyway. Their Sunday Brunch menu is available 11:30 – 4pm, with starters like Terrine of Foie Gras, Lamb, Squab etc., or Hand-rolled Cavatelli with Pancetta; mains feature classy egg dishes as well as Grilled Hanger Steak with Frites and Arugal, Moorish Brick chicken, or Pan Eared Salmon. A Mother’s Day Dinner prix fixe is also available for $49.

Recently honored with a food safety , the Singletree continues to deliver home-good breakfasts and lunches at its location near the soon-to-be . Mother’s Day specials include Mochaca, a Mexican scramble with slow-roasted, marinated shredded beef and all the trimmings ($11.95), as well as Wild Salmon Benedict, Fresh Shrimp scramble, Tri-Tip sandwiches and more.

Mother’s Day Brunch is available at Zin from noon to 3:30 pm, including many of their homemade and homegrown specials. The menu includes starters from Grilled Gulf Shrimp Skewers to Mexican Beer Battered Green Beans, and main courses including Applewood Smoked & Grilled Niman Ranch Pork Chops and Duck Hash (there it is again!) on a warm spinach salad with house bacon, topped with a poached egg and Hollandaise. Kill me now.
