According to Smith, Blu Homes in 2009 bought the rights to a previous high profile Bay Area prefab designer, architect Michelle Kaufmann.

Kaufmann's prefab homes were featured in Sunset Magazine and received wide attention several years ago -- not only for their affordability, but also their use of sustainable materials and their emphasis on integrating living spaces with the natural environment.

"We took Michelle's designs and expanded on them," Smith said. "We made the homes bigger and gave them higher ceilings."

Smith said the Blu Homes prefabs cost between $125,000 for the studio model, up to about $550,000 for the largest home.
