Habitat for Humanity update

Volunteers needed for landscape and exterior clean up at Habitat houses; also, an open house guide for the weekend.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY UPDATE

 

Construction of the two homes, located on University Street, involves a partnership between community volunteers and members of the two recipient families, who Habitat requires they put in 500 hours of “sweat equity” into their homes during the building process. Both recipient families have five children. 

 Kathy Fong, director for the University Street home in Healdsburg, said she was excited to report that the financial goals are getting close.

She noted that Jean Schultz of the Jean Schultz Foundation placed a challenge grant when the weather turned bad and the donations -- and the project in general -- began to slow a bit. That grant turned things around, she said.

“The results were overwhelming and we are now getting close to the end of this project,” Fong said.

In addition, recently contributed $5,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County to support the construction of two houses in Healdsburg to help families in need.

THE HOMES ARE ALMOST DONE 

The flooring is in, the countertops are being installed and the appliances are going in next week. The homes should be done soon with the new owners moving in early May.

THE NEW OWNERS 

is an Iraq war veteran and a member of the National Guard. In addition to his job in Healdsburg, every weekend he works at the Habitat build site to help in the construction of the home for his family.

Blosser, a platoon leader, will be on active duty next spring when the home is completed, but he says he is happy that his family, including wife Nikki and five daughters, will move into a safe, decent home while he is away.

Javier Martinez works full time at a local winery as a cellar man. Martinez and his wife Maria Elena spend their weekends working with the volunteers who are building their home.

Daughters Yaneth and Maria care for their three younger siblings while their parents work at the Habitat build site.

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to build decent, affordable housing for families to build not only homes, but also building hope.
