In Healdsburg, Things Go Better with Wine
Not just food, but music, gardens and art are enhanced. But is beer the new wine?
Maybe simultaneous Art and Short Film Festivals last weekend spoiled us, so let's put our attention back where it belongs: the everyday excellence of life in Healdsburg and environs.
What is striking about that is the apparent realization that hereabouts, wine goes with everything good in life.
Wine & Food: Tonight, Thursday Sept. 27, there may still places available at DaVero Farms & Winery, where a winemaker Harvest Supper includes four courses, from Fig & Black Pepper Bruschetta to Grandmother’s Dry Creek Peach Cobbler, with Short Ribs and grilled Market Vegetables in between. Wine & Music: Tremoloco will be playing their roots music and Mexican-Americana favorites, as well as songs from the new CD Salsipuedes at this release party at Garagiste Winery on Healdsburg Ave. Bonus: Latin/Lounge jazz songs featuring Cougar Estrada (of Los Lobos) in the Lounge Trio. It's all Friday from 6 - 8 p.m., and doubtless Stark and Cartograph wines will be available.
On Saturday afternoon, Ferrari Carrano's downtown gift shop and tasting room, Seasons of the Vineyard, showcases live Brazilian jazz from the Ami Molinelli Trio. She played the memorable Latin Jazz concert at the 2011 Healdsburg Jazz Festival, this is a perfect chance to get even closer to the rhythm. At 113 Plaza St., from 4 p.m. to 6.

Wine & Garden: A bit farther out Westside Road, right about where the Dry Creek Valley turns into the Russian River Valley appellation, take a break and relax in the organic aroma gardens of VML Winery with a glass of the newly released 2011 Bradford Mountain Red Field Blend. On Saturday from 1 - to 5 p.m., you can hear and music by Brian Bergeron as well.
Wine & Art: The Richard Ragan Fine Art gallery is now located at a new Old Roma Station suite. Formerly located at 210 Healdsburg Ave., the gallery represents California's of most exceptional artists - Jason Avery Kelch, Terry Sauve, Linda Schroeter, Sargam Griffin and Sylvia Verange. You can find them on exhibit in Suite J, and often in one of the 11 wine tasting rooms at the Old Roma Station, corner of Front and Hudson.
Beer & Everything Else: However, it's becoming increasingly clear that "Beer is the new wine." Sunday at the Bear Republic Brewing Company, the attention to aroma and palate, detail and intensity that sommeliers stake their reputations on become available to the hops-and-malt crowd. It's their fourth annual Cellar Party, a public tasting and tabulation for the Great American Beer Festival.
Over 20 beers will be sampled, the exact batches submitted for judging at the October 11th – 14th GABF in Denver. The enjoyable and educational afternoon -- we were there last year, and shot a video - will include beer sampling, hors d'oeuvres and a commemorative glass you can take home to drink Bear Republic beers all year long. It's from 2 - 5 p.m., costs $65, and last I heard, only a very few tickets remained. Get yours here.
