Weekend in Healdsburg with Theater, Arts and Movies

It's not all about the Plaza.

Despite the self-congratulatory coverage of Healdsburg's classic downtown Plaza and our Small Town status, there are many more reasons to like this town. It's because we live here, after all, and have high school sports heroes, local theater, and much more to celebrate.

Healdsburg High School is holding their eighth induction ceremony for its Athletic Hall of Fame, Saturday night at St. John’s. The menu looked so good – roasted pork loin, garlic mashed potatoes, etc. – that we were devastated to find out that the dinner was sold out (but not surprised).

But you are welcome to come at 8:00 p.m. when they honor this year’s seven inductees.  They  are: Leroy Danhausen  (Class of ’47),  Johnnie Walker  (’61)  Chari Redeker Perce  (’79),  Todd Trask  (’87), Aaron Bugarske  (’92),  Myriah Volk  (’93),  and an honorary induction for Harry Tappin.

All will be in attendance at the induction, except for Leroy Danhausen who recently passed away. A PFD with their accomplishments can be found with this article. More about the Healdsburg High Hall of Fame online.

On Sunday, the Healdsburg Senior Writing Project will hold their first community reading of 2013, 2:0 p.m. at the Healdsburg Senior Center. Their book, Tuesday Morning Memories, will be available to purchase at the event. Refreshments will be served, and donations toward the publication of their second book will be appreciated. For more information please call the Healdsburg Senior Center 431-3324.

The Upstairs Art Gallery (top level of Levin & Co.) has an interesting new exhibit, Art of the Dance, featuring oils and drawings by Jim Richards. It includes a series of paintings depicting a single ballerina among other works. The gallery is open daily 11 to 6; there will be an artist’s reception next weekend, Satuirday the 13th from 3 to 6 in the afternoon.

The hyper-local Camp Rose Theater continues their production of “Dial M for Murder” at the So. Fitch Mountain stage. The play that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s single foray into 3D is at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. on Sundays. $12 tickets (only 30 seats each performance) available from 707.473.0616.

Speaking of theater, next weekend is the premier of a comedy about a housebound hypochondriac. It has a similar weekend schedule, and runs from April 12 - 28. Tickets and more information here.

Speaking of the Raven, the Film Center brings us the Tina Fey-Paul Rudd comedy “Admission” this week, sharing the Hollywood & Wine space with the remake of “Evil Dead. ” Also opening is the re-issue of Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” in 3D. Beware the velociraptors. Continuing is “The Croods” with celebrity voices.

Speaking of celebrities, keep your eyes open: “Healdsburg is on fire,” as the local businesses say.
