2.4-magnitude earthquake today near the Geysers

At least the third minor earthquake in that area in the past week.

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.4 struck this afternoon in Sonoma County.

It was at least the third earthquake of similar magnitude in that area in the past week.

The quake shook an area near the Geysers at 4:44 p.m. and had a depth of 1.7 miles, according to the USGS.

The tremor was centered three miles north-northeast of the Geyserrs.

The Geysers is the largest single geothermal field in the world, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, and experiences constant seismic events between 0.5 and 3.0 on the Richter scale.
