The red 1996 Ferrari F355 GTS was traveling south on Highway 1 just north of Kruse Ranch Road on the Sonoma County coast around 11 a.m. when it went off the west side of the roadway, California Highway Patrol Officer Marcus Hawkins said.

The Ferrari then veered the other way, crossed all lanes of the highway and struck a tree on the eastern side of the road. The car caught fire, and the flames spread to a small patch of brush and shrubs on the hillside, Hawkins said.

Both occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 a.m. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, Hawkins said.

The highway was closed from Kruse Ranch Road to Stewarts Point-Skaggs Springs Road until 5 p.m. while Caltrans repaired the damage caused to the road by the fire, Hawkins said.
