Popular New Year's destination suffers culvert failure on Limantour Road;
A road at the Point Reyes National Seashore has been closed after a large gap appeared in the roadway Monday, park officials said.
Limantour Road has been closed due to the failure of the culvert beneath it and will not reopen until park engineers can assess the damage and begin repair work.
"It is terrible to start the New Year like this," park acting superintendent David Brouillette said. "Limantour Beach is a very popular destination and opening the road is a top priority for us."

The closure affects vehicle access to Limantour Road and other areas such as Sky and Coast Trailheads, the Point Reyes Hostel, and the Clem Miller Education Center, park officials said.
Park facilities and trails remain open.
