Monitoring the World's Forests from Space: An Introduction to GlobalForestWatch.org

We are thrilled to welcome
Robin Kraft, World Resource Institute’s Lead Data Architect for the Global
Forest Watch project, “an online forest monitoring and alert system that
empowers people everywhere to better manage forests.” It is a mapping application
that “unites satellite technology, open data, and crowdsourcing to guarantee
access to timely and reliable information about forests.” A Sonoma County
native, Robin will present a fascinating visual overview of this cutting edge
technology, share real-world applications from around the world and answer
questions. For more information on Global Forest Watch, visit www.globalforestwatch.org

Born and raised in Santa
Rosa, Robin Kraft works on Global Forest Watch and is co-architect of the FORMA
near-real time forest monitoring system. He is co-founder of the EcoHack
hackathon, as well as a founding member of Data Lab, which aims to leverage big
data and scalable analysis for environmental applications. Robin previously
worked on data-heavy environmental applications at the Center for Global
Development, Resources for the Future, the World Bank and UC Berkeley. Robin
Kraft graduated from Santa Rosa High School and got college off to a great
start at our local Santa Rosa Junior College. He studied development economics
at Sciences Po in Paris, history at UC Berkeley, and GIS and remote sensing at
University of Maryland, College Park. Robin is an engaging, fun speaker, and is
tailoring his message for the environmentally-aware layperson interested in
learning how technology can help the world’s forests.
