Hounds Squeeze Past Prospectors

Healdsburg tops Piner 19-18

The Healdsburg Greyhounds came from behind to edge the Piner High School Prospectors 19-18 Friday night at Rec Park.  Two pass interceptions and a late fumble by Piner combined with three missed point after touchdown attempts allowed the Hounds to steal the game.

The first half of Friday’s match-up was a slow game with neither team able to sustain momentum with the ball.  Piner scored late in the first quarter on a 15 yard run by quarterback Noel Hernandez stretching the ball over the goal line.  A missed point after attempt set the score for the remainder of the half at 6-0 Piner.

Piner took the kick-off to start the second half and controlled the ball for the first 5 minutes, finally scoring on a dive over the goal line by Tyler Gabriel from inside the 1 yard line.  Another missed PAT put the score at 12-0 Piner.

Healdsburg took the lead with 2:58 left in the third quarter on a 14 yard score by Chris Pedroni.  A missed PAT left the score 13-12 Healdsburg.  The game turned back to Piner’s favor with 3:07 left  in the fourth quarter on a 20 yard TD reception by Piner’s Tony Martignoli.  Again the Prospectors failed to convert a two-point conversion, setting the score at 18-13.

Showing they weren’t done yet, the Hounds scored with 2:28 left on another pass to Cleaver who carried the ball 58 yards to put the Hound’s up for good.  A missed PAT put the final score at 19-18.  Healdsburg stopped the final Prospector possession and took the ball for the final time with 1:03 on the clock.  The Hounds ran-out the clock for the win.

Piner failed to convert all three of their PAT attempts and Healdsburg failed on two, allowing the Hounds to squeak by for the win, breaking their two game loosing streak.

Healdsburg will be back in action in two weeks on Nov 8th at El Molino after a bye week.
