2.7 magnitude quake rattles area near Geysers

Early morning earthquake latest in series.

A 2.7-magnitude earthquake shook Sonoma County early Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor struck at about 1:45 a.m. and was centered three miles north-northwest of The Geysers and 17 miles east-northeast of Cloverdale, the USGS reported.

USGS said that the quake had a depth of 1.6 miles.

The area of The Geysers stands as the largest single geothermal field in the world, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The region continually produces earthquakes between 0.5 and 3.0 on the Richter scale, related to deep-well injection that the Department of Energy says is necessary for the extended and sustained production of geothermal resources at the site.
