82 speeding tickets issued Sunday on 101
California Highway Patrol uses special technology; some speeders were clocked at more than 90 mph.
California Highway Patrol officers issued 82 citations for speeding on U.S. Highway 101 in Sonoma County on Sunday morning.
Several drivers were traveling at more than 90 mph, including a female driver in a 2005 Honda who was traveling at 92 mph, Sgt. Allan Capurro said.
Twelve CHP officers from the agency's Fatal Accident Suppression Team used LIDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, technology to determine the drivers' speed during the three-and-a-half-hour operation, which was carried out between River Road and Todd Road in the Santa Rosa area, Capurro said.

LIDAR technology allows the CHP to calculate speed based on the time delay between the transmission of a laser pulse and the detection of the reflected signal, according to the CHP. The technology can be mounted in a handheld camera "gun."
The goal was to get motorists to slow down, pay attention to the road and prevent the needless loss of life, Capurro said.

The crackdown on speeders was funded by a grant from the state Office Of Traffic Safety.
