Child Airlifted From Head-On Crash Monday Near Sonoma Raceway

A three-vehicle crash near the Sonoma Raceway late this morning left a man and a child with serious injuries when his car crashed head-on into a moving truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just before 11:55 a.m. when a 32-year-old man driving a Pontiac Grand Prix north on Lakeville Road just north of state Highway 37 crossed over the double yellow lines and clipped the front of a Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, the CHP said.

The Chevrolet spun out of control and plunged down an embankment, landing on its passenger side. The Pontiac kept driving north in the southbound lanes and hit a Ryder truck head-on, the CHP said.

The Pontiac's driver was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries and his passenger, estimated to be about 5 or 6 years old was flown to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland with major injuries, the CHP said.

The Chevrolet driver, a 21-year-old Hayward woman, and the Ryder truck's driver, a 47-year-old Oakland man, were both hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening, the CHP said.

Two other passengers in the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries.

Lakeville Road was shut down to traffic until about 3:30 p.m., the CHP said.

Alcohol and drugs have not been ruled out as a factor in the collision.
