CHP Arrests Convicted Felon for DUI, Other Charges, near Healdsburg

Man allegedly had rifle and revolver in the car when stopped on Dry Creek Road on Saturday.

A California Highway Patrol officer arrested a man driving near Healdsburg Saturday with a felony conviction, a suspected DUI charge and allegedly carrying a 41 magnum revolver under the seat.

CHP spokesman Jon Sloat said Dana Kelly Thornburgh, 51, of Annapolis, was stopped at 4:55 p.m. Saturday CHP Officer Brian Wood, when Wood was on routine patrol on eastbound Dry Creek Road. After a records check, DUI evaluation and search of the truck, Wood arrested Thornburg on multiple charges.

Sonoma County Jail staff said Monday Thornburgh was not in custody. It was not immediately clear if he was transferred to another facility.

Sloat said Wood's attention was drawn to a Toyota pick-up directly in front of him. The officer noted that the truck crossed over on to the shoulder several times, and he made a stop on the vehicle. Upon contacting the driver, the officer noted an odor of alcohol emitting from the vehicle, Sloat said.

The driver was identified as Thornburgh. While speaking to Thornburgh, the officer observed the butt of a rifle sticking out from behind the driver’s seat.

The officer asked Thornburg to exit the vehicle, and following a DUI evaluation, the officer determined that he was not to under the influence. Thornburg was detained while the officer secured the weapon.

"While conducting a search of the truck, the officer located the rifle, as well as a 41 magnum revolver under the seat," Sloat said. "Also located was an Altoid tin containing crystal methamphetamine, along with a glass smoking pipe."

A records check revealed that Thornburg has a suspended license, a lengthy criminal record, and is a convicted felon.

Thornburg was placed under arrest, and booked on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession while armed, possession of drug paraphernalia, being a felon in possession of a firearm, having those weapons concealed, and driving while suspended.
