Fire Engineer Position Opens in Healdsburg

Two-year SAFER grant will fund position being vacated

 

The City of Healdsburg announced today there’s an opening on the city payroll for a Fire Engineer, according to their website.

Details on the full-time position include a salary rate of pay at $5,506-$6,718 per month plus medical and other benefits. Annual salary at those rates is between $66,072 and $80,616.

Although at the last City Council meeting Fire Capt. Steve Adams acknowleged that the department was operating on a tight budget, the position that is being filled was created by a two-year SAFER grant. The individual who had been by hired by the grant is leaving the department to take a job with the city of Santa Rosa.

Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) is a federal support program will be used to make sure fire departments can attain and maintain 24-hour staffing, and to assure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.

According to the information brochure and application for (attached to this article), the Fire Engineer position is distinguished from the Fire Captain position in that Fire Engineers do not directly supervise subordinate personnel. Fire Engineers are expected to perform the full range of fire suppression, safety and prevention duties and perform journey-level skills in all areas of work assigned.

And yes, you get to drive a fire truck if you get the job. Duties include “drive and operate all fire apparatus and equipment; Operate engine pumping equipment to ensure proper water flow;  Operate a variety of tools and equipment related to fire suppression, rescue and hazardous materials emergency activities,” as well as maintenance thereof.

All application material must be received by the Personnel Office no later than 5:00 PM on Monday, April 15th 2013.
