Healdsburg Goodwill Worker Victim of Cloverdale Fire

Saturday fund-raiser to be held at Cloverdale, Healdsburg stores to help with burial fund

The fire that killed a Cloverdale family in their mobile home on Monday morning was caused by a power strip that was overloaded with extension cords, Cloverdale Fire Chief Jason Jenkins said yesterday.

Charles and Paula Baynes, both 33, and their 4-year-old son Phillip were found in a bedroom of the mobile home at 53 Sherwood Circle in the Briarwood Mobile Home Park after the fire was reported at 1:44 a.m.

All three were given CPR in front of the mobile home. Charles was pronounced dead at the scene and Paula and Phillip were taken to Healdsburg District Hospital where they died, Jenkins said.

Paula Baynes worked as a cashier in the Healdsburg Goodwill store.

"She came to work for us last November," Ihde said. "She was very highly regarded by her co-workers."

Some of the home's permanent electrical wiring was not working properly, and it appears the family was using extension cords and power strips instead, Jenkins said.

There were no working smoke detectors in the home, and firefighters encountered thick black smoke in the bedroom area, Jenkins said.
