A man was found dead in a car outside of a burning home north of Bodega Bay early Monday morning, a fire chief said.

The single-story house, located in a subdivision on Coastal Avenue in the village of Carmet, was destroyed in the blaze, Monte Rio Fire Protection District Chief Steve Baxman said.

A neighbor reported the fire around 3:20 a.m. When the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District arrived, the house was engulfed in flames, Baxman said.

The circumstances of the death remain under investigation. The man's body was not burned, but he might have inhaled superheated gas from the blaze, Baxman said.

Firefighters from Bodega Bay, Monte Rio, Gold Ridge, Occidental and Bodega controlled the fire in about 45 minutes, Baxman said.
