Stranger Who Allegedly Hid in Woman's Back Seat Arrested on Kidnapping Charges

Sonoma County sheriff's investigators arrested a Windsor man Thursday for allegedly trying to kidnap a woman at a convenience store in Windsor on Saturday.

Alejandro Cruz-Valdovinos, 29, was allegedly in the back seat of the woman's vehicle at the Quick Shop and Deli at 8197 Old Redwood Highway on Nov. 30.

When the 53-year-old Windsor woman left the inside of the market and started driving away, Cruz-Valdovinos allegedly confronted her, sheriff's Sgt. Shannon McAlvain said.

The woman, unaware someone was in the back seat, then jumped from the car and yelled for help as she ran back to the market, McAlvain said.

The suspect fled and sheriff's deputies assigned to the Windsor Police Department found the woman's vehicle on Shadetree Drive just east of Old Redwood Highway, McAlvain said.

Cruz-Valdovinos was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at his place of employment on Corby Avenue in Santa Rosa, McAlvain said. He was booked in the Sonoma County jail on suspicion of kidnapping, burglary and battery with serious injury and is scheduled to be arraigned in Sonoma County Superior Court on Dec. 9.

He is being held under no bail because of an Immigration and Custom Enforcement hold, a jail spokeswoman said.
