Windsor boys injured in bike-truck accident

Two Windsor High School youths riding bike to school collide with truck on Old Redwood Highway.

Two Windsor High School students riding a two-seater bicycle to school this morning were injured when they were hit by a pickup truck, a police sergeant said.

The 16- and 17-year-old boys were riding west on Old Redwood Highway when they were hit by a gray Chevrolet pikcup at the southbound U.S. Highway 101 off-ramp near downtown Windsor around 7:35 a.m., Sgt. Mark Essick said.

The driver of the pickup, 58-year-old Lester Pinola, of Windsor, was on the off-ramp preparing to turn left onto eastbound Old Redwood Highway when the collision occurred, Essick said.

One boy suffered facial and head injuries and the other suffered cuts and bruises to his legs, Essick said. Both were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The mother of one of the boys happened to be driving by the accident scene and stopped to help her son, Essick said.

Pinola said he had a green light, and other witnesses said the boys on the bicycle entered the intersection on a yellow light, Essick said.

The investigation will determine who had the right-of-way, Essick said. Any witnesses with information about the collision are asked to call Windsor police Deputy Jose Acevedo at (707) 838-1234.
