Brian Curtis Honored for 30 Years with Healdsburg Fire Department

Curtis, who retired as a reserve firefighter engineer, receives proclamation from Healdsburg City Council for his dedication and devotion to the community and to the fire department.

Brian Curtis, the "go-to guy" for the for the past 30 years, was honored this week by for his devotion and dedication to the community.

City Council on Monday night issued a proclamation recognizing Curtis, who started with the fire department as a reserve firefighter in 1981 and was promoted to reserve fire engineer in 1988, on the occasion of his retirement.

"Brian received the Distinguished Firefighter of the Year Award in 1984, 1992 and 2004," said Healdsburg Mayor Tom Chambers. "He's the only one to win it three times."

Chambers said Curtis "exemplifies what true duty and respect of a firefighter should be," he said.

Curtis thanked the council members for their support and then sat back to hear accolades from his peers.

Healdsburg Fire Chief Steve Adams, who worked with Curtis for 14 years, said other firefighters in the mold of Curtis "don't exist," he said.

"Brian was so committed to his community and the fire department family," Adams said. "At 2 a.m., he was the face that was always there."

Former Healdsburg Fire Chief Randy Collins said he served with Curtis for 24 years.

"Brian handled a lot of the social fabric for our firefighters," Collins said. "When you have a lot of volunteers, that's very important."

Curtis also set an example for younger firefighters and helped mentor them, Collins said.

"Very rarely do you see someone who offers the level of dedication that you do," Collins said to Curtis. "My hat's off to you."

More than a dozen of Curtis's friends, family and colleagues were present for the proclamation Monday night at A retirement dinner was also held in Curtis's honor.
