Healdsburg Teen to Be Honored at State Capitol Thursday

A Healdsburg teen who just graduated from a private Christian school in Santa Rosa is one of 180 scholarship winners to be honored at the state Capitol Thursday.

Garrett Macinnis, outgoing student body president at Rincon Valley Christian School, has won a 2012 Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship of $1,000. 

"He really is an amazing student," said Rincon Valley Registrar Carol MacLeod of Macinnis, who lives in Healdsburg.

He is one of 10 students from Sonoma County to win the scholarship. (Click on this link to see the full list of 180 California student winners).

Rincon Valley Christian School Guidance Counselor Marci Guevara said Macinnis has been accepted on full scholarship into the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

"We're going to miss him," Guevara said of Macinnis, who played baseball, football and basketball and was a member of the jazz band. "He's been a real leader the whole time he's been here."

She said Macinnis, a member of the school's student executive council for several years, also has received a $500 scholarship from the North Coast Builders' Exchange.

"He's very well-liked and respected," she added. "And he's got a great sense of humor."

A ceremony for all the winners is set for Thursday at noon on the steps of the state Capitol in Sacramento.

Invited speakers are: Gov. Jerry Brown, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, lawmakers from around the state and Comcast officials.

 Comcast is awarding a total of $200,000 in scholarships and 25 laptop computers in its California "Leaders and Achievers" educational awards program.
