New IT Director Tapped at Sonoma County

John Hartwig has more than 20 years experience in information technology systems.

John Hartwig, a veteran of information technology management in public and private sectors in Washington state, Wyoming and in San Diego, was named Tuesday as the new Information Systems Director for the County of Sonoma.

He will start Sept. 20 in the job at a salary of $161,400 annually and under a three-year contract.

Hartwig's appointment follows an extensive recruitment process, said Efren Carrillo, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.

 “Improving the delivery of services will be driven by our smart use of technology," Carrillo said. " John has experience with developing and implementing state of the art systems that have improved customer service and reduced the costs of those services.

"That combination of skills is a win-win for the residents of Sonoma County,” Carrillo said.

Hartwig has more than 20 years of experience in government technology and central services.

From 1991 to 2008, he worked in increasingly responsible positions for the Snohomish County Information Services Department, in Everett, Washington.

In 2008, he served as the Administrator of the Information Technology Division, and Executive Director of the Public Safety Communications Commission for the State of Wyoming. 

Prior to joining governmental service, he worked in the private sector systems integration arena providing technology solutions to federal, state, local and commercial markets from offices in San Diego and Seattle, Washington.

“I appreciate the Board’s confidence in me to advance their technology vision for Sonoma County,” Hartwig said. “I look forward to working with an outstanding team and being part of the Sonoma County community.”

Hartwig holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Michigan State University. 

Hartwig was raised in Portage, Michigan and met his wife Jeanette in San Diego.  They have two grown daughters and having visited Sonoma County numerous times during family vacations.
