New Terms for Animal Services Approved by County

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved the contract to provide short-term animal care and control services in the City of Healdsburg following the closure last week of the Healdsburg Animal Shelter.

“We want to ensure a seamless transition,” says Supervisor Mike McGuire, North County Supervisor and a former Healdsburg City Council member. “The County is committed to providing Healdsburg's neediest animals with the best care possible and the residents with excellent service as the City and its partners seek a long-term solution.”

The County is currently under contract with the City of Healdsburg to provide emergency after hours animal services. The contract approved on Tuesday expands that contract for six months to include animal control field services and animal shelter services to be delivered by Sonoma County Animal Care and Control (ACC).

Mayor Susan Jones, who until recently chaired the non-profit Green Dog Foundation, noted that the City “may have been without these needed services that protect our animals and our community,” were it not for the County of Sonoma stepping in and taking over Animal Control and Shelter services, “while we prepare for the next era of animal care in our community.”

Selena Polston, the interim director of ACC following Amy Cooper’s surprise resignation last month, said “ACC’s field, shelter, and operational staff are preparing to meet the needs of Healdsburg’s animals and people.”

The City of Healdsburg will continue to handle dog licensing for the City, along with the retrieval of dead animals, most trapped wild animals, and healthy feral cats. To receive these services call the Healdsburg Police Department at 431-3377.

For all other domestic animal services, Healdsburg residents should contact Sonoma County Animal Care and Control at 565-7100, 1247 Century Court in Santa Rosa (near the Sonoma County Airport). ACC is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon  –  5:30 p.m.
