All They Want Is Your Blood

The 6th Annual Bucket Brigade is Fri., Dec. 16. Come join the friendly competition between Healdsburg and Geyserville in this community event.

All they want is your blood. That's not too much to ask, is it? It's a life-saving gift, most needed during the winter months.

On Dec. 16, blood will be flowing as the 6th Annual Bucket Brigade ramps up for donations. The Brigade is a friendly competition among Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino County fire departments.

“We decided to do the Bucket Brigade during the winter months,” said Kim Borgna of the Blood Centers of the Pacific. “It’s really the hardest time to collect blood.

“And it’s typically when we need it the most,” Borgna continued.

Accidents are usually up during the holidays and that’s when blood is needed to stock local blood banks.

“Blood Centers of the Pacific merged with the Blood Bank of the Redwoods,” said Borgna, “in order to serve a larger community.”

The local rivalry is a friendly one between Healdsburg and Geyserville Fire Departments. Healdsburg Fire Chief Steve Adams and Joe Stewart are the leads for Healdsburg and Geyserville respectively.

“The challenge runs December 2011 through January 2012,” according to an e-mail from Borgna. “Each year the challenge continues to grow because of community support and our fire stations competitive nature.

"With the support of over 40 departments the event grew from 650 donors the first season to over 1800 last season," she said.

The Healdsburg Fire Bucket Brigade Blood Drive will be Fri., Dec. 16, from 2:30 – 7:30pm at the Healdsburg Fire Department.

“It’s important to make an appointment,” said Borgna. “We staff accordingly.”
