Summer Camp, Swim Lesson Classes Filling Up Quickly

Don't wait until it's too late - summer camps for kids 3-11 are filling up quickly, and it's never too late to learn how to swim.

The school year ends on May 30 at most Healdsburg Area schools. It will be a minimum day for all students – elementary schools, junior and senior high school.

Coming just three days after a five-day Memorial Day holiday, it’s a safe bet that academics are a fading priority for many youngsters in Healdsburg.

It also presents both challenge and opportunity for parents of young children and the children alike. What to do with summer?

Parks and Recreation has some suggestions: summer camp and swimming lessons. Targeting the primary school-age population, and even younger, the Parks & Rec camps range from half-day Preschool Camps (3-5 years), a new Kinder Camp program (for 6 and 7 year olds) and the Sizzling Summer Day Camps (6-11 years). All camps start June 3, the Monday following the last day of school.

"Sign ups are going really great," said Sonja Drown, the recreation manager for the City of Healdsburg. "We encourage early registration to avoid disappointment, due to full classes and camps."

Preschool Camps are two-week camps on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for $156. Two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday) run $59 for the two-week sessions. Themed camps include Dinosaur Detectives, Flying High, Clowning Around and Ocean Adventures.

Kinder Camps for 6 and 7 year olds are a new program for children who have completed kindergarten and first grade. The week-long camps run Monday-Friday from 9 – 1, and cost $130.

The Sizzling Summer Day Camps for older elementary age children, 6 – 11, are also week-long camps, in either full day or half-day programs. The camps feature crafts, enrichment activities, games & sports, gardening & environmental education, swimming and more. A special “Star Wars Camp” will run the week of July 22-26. Fees are $145 a week for the full day program (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), $79 for the half-days (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and $40 for a daily drop-in.

If learning how to swim is on your summer to-do list, Parks and Rec also has 25-minue swim lesson classes, during both morning and afternoon hours, on Monday through Thursday. Group lessons are $55 for a two-week session, private lessons are $95 for one week. Swimming lessons are held at the Healdsburg Swim Center on the High School campus (phone 431-3613 for pool information).

All of the above summer camp programs (except swim lessons) take place at the Healdsburg Community Center at Foss Creek. To register online for any of these program, go to this page or call 431-3301 for information.
