The Ancestors of Mexico” exhibit, celebrating the Mexican history and heritage of HealdsburgRead More and northern Sonoma County, opened at the Healdsburg Museum on August 1 and will be on display through November 8th. The exhibit features history and cultural traditions, handcrafted textiles and pottery from Mexican artisans, photos and memorabilia on loan from local Mexican-American families, plus a few historical artifacts and photos from the Museum’s collection. The exhibit is primarily based on outreach to the community. We wanted to encourage local people to share their family histories and photographs with the Healdsburg Museum and to celebrate Mexican heritage. We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the exhibit and event. Our "Ancestors of Mexico" event in the Plaza brought people together to celebrate and honor Mexican culture and history of this area. We were fortunate that the Plaza was available on September 16, Mexican Independence Day. It was so gratifying to see such a huge integrated crowd gather together on Sunday afternoon enjoying mariachi music, traditional Mexican dance and clothing, food and drink, Museum displays and a raffle. We advertised it as a alcohol-free, family-friendly event and that's what it was. Thank you to all who helped or attended the event!

Hi Ann: Thanks for the time check. You're right -- the CalFresh EBT program was announced in 2011 asRead More per the article I wrote (link is above in the article) and the article you wrote. "Earlier this year," meaning 2012, is incorrect. My how the time flies! I will fix in the article. Thanks!
Ann Carranza September 5, 2012 at 09:49 pm
A correction to the article: The Healdsburg Certified Farmers' Market has been "matching"Read More funds for CalFresh EBT for more than a year (I wrote about it last year, and I believe it was operating the year before). While the amount of the match has increased from $10 to $20, the program has been in effect for a long time. See the Healdsburg Patch article written last year (July 13, 2011): http://healdsburg.patch.com/articles/good-gardening-and-good-food-go-hand-in-hand The article included the matching funds information.

Hey, Repug Kid, I got it. It was parody. Parody is a hard thing to achieve in writing, man. MostRead More folks don't get it.

Good point Margarita! Yes, people should use their real names. Love your word play, man but now IRead More am thirsty.

Well man, no offense Tom but trying to make the Republicans look ignorant seems like an easy task,Read More dude.

Thank you to all people who have commented and who have been willing to try to shed light on whatRead More appears to be a very difficult situation both for staff and clients' families. It's clear that everyone involved is dedicated to helping the clients and to serving the greater good. Hopefully a dialogue has been opened that will lead to clearer communication. Thanks also for being respectful and for making the effort to refrain from personal attacks in this forum. Those kinds of exchanges do not serve anyone.

What has happened to the heart and soul of Becoming Independent? How can people in a humanitarianRead More atmosphere, working with those less fortunate find themselves on the street? Why? Why are so many people gone from this organization. Rae Pavonka must be turning over in her grave. The Peter Principle is the belief that an organization where promotion is based on achievement, success, and merit, will eventually promote their members beyond their level of ability, they will be given more authority, until they cannot continue to work competently. The work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence. So did the now terminated employees reach their level of incompetence, or are the people responsible for their departure the incompetents? Are the people still their about to reach their level of incompetence? It is a damn shame that this has turned into a political hatchet job performed by a few, who may not know who or what is really good and who or what is really bad.

Thanks Keri! I just reposted on the right page!

Hi Carla: That is a huge issue and I know you're not alone in having to find affordable housing on aRead More fixed income. Patch also did a story on the same topic last week: http://healdsburg.patch.com/articles/growth-management-committee-continues-their-deliberations ....Hopefully the people who are working on this committee will make sure that if extra units are added, that there be plenty of affordable homes in the mix.
Carla Trotter August 27, 2012 at 05:23 pm
I would like to comment on an article in today's PD about housing in Healdsburg and how many toRead More build. There was a mention that at least one person was against building Senior housing. As a single, retired senior, I possibly will be forced out of Healdsburg because there is very little in the way affordable rent-able housing for seniors on a fixed income much less people with families who are middle income. There is, in fact, very few affordable homes/condos for middle income seniors or families. I would hope they have people on this committee that really understand what seniors face in this day and age of housing prices. I have lived here for 40 years and feel sad that it might be time for me to leave. Carla Trotter

I really can't believe nobody has commented, What does it take to make people angry nowadays? MaybeRead More it was a mistake, 54 million isn't that much compared to the two trillion the military lost, but then that section of the pentagon was hit by a missile eleven years ago, so the search was called off. It's okay everybody go back to work every thing is fine.
Lisa Larose July 24, 2012 at 08:29 pm
I agree with this but it will never happen. They all cover up for each other!! It's good they gotRead More caught. Someone was watching!!! This is like Enron!
Darris July 23, 2012 at 04:22 pm
In it's purest form this is embezzlement and anyone involved should be fired, lose all benefits, payRead More damages, and do time. But do you really think that will happen? There might be a fall guy or two and then the rest of it will simply be swept under the rug . . . UNLESS we don't let that happen! This is OUR MONEY! We should have 100% access to the books and there needs to be a triple-check system in place. This is the pinnacle of amateur bookkeeping . . . disgraceful . . .

How can any one department of the State of California government manage to "hide" $54Read More million in reserves that no one else in state government knew about it? I suspect this cover-up goes much beyond that and that there are others in state government who should be held accountable. If in fact no one outside the Parks Department knew about it, then why didn't they know? As far as the Attorney General's department "launching an investigation", who can trust anything the Attorney General says or does? After all, it was Attorney General Kamala Harris who announced in February she had "secured $18 billion from the five biggest banks to benefit California struggling homeowners", and then those funds were re-directed to fill gaps in the state budget, rather than to struggling homeowners. Governor Jerry Brown "should" have know about this and if he didn't, why didn't he? There is too much in California that's corrupt, and this is just one more facet of that corruption.

I find it hard to imagine that the (not-all--that-close) proximity of a dog park to the Villa wouldRead More cause people not to book weddings and other events there. It seems more reasonable that the dearth of desired income is related to the rate structure. As a frequent "frequenter" of the park since 2005, I've observed that when rental prices were raised precipitously a few years ago, for both locals and out-of-towners, nonprofits or privates, the "occupancy rate" plunged, and has not recovered much since then. Fewer bookings at higher rates has probably resulted in about the same income as before the rate hike, but not any increaswe. The planners should be very careful about striving for the "high end." Would the cost of "improvements" (such as relocating a very nice, heavily used dog park) be covered by any resulting income increases? And does the high-end concept fit what local residents/taxpayers need and can support? Or would a "medium nice" locale, at slightly lower rates than currently in effect, result in more satisfaction and more dollars from nonprofit groups, families staging quinceaneros, reunions, and the like?

The narrow plot of land next to the Natl. Guard Armory on Powell was suggested. It is too small,Read More narrow and is a hillside that would be a hazard when wet. Also directly across the street from residences. The feds won't let us use it anyway. The other area was the flood basin behind the skate park. No parking. About 1/8 a mile to enter. Under water about 4 months of the year. Transients live on the railroad tracks next to it. No shade at all. Both sites were looked at 10 years ago and deemed unsuitable by the city then.. Nothing makes them any more suitable now. There was a suggestion of over were Saggio Hills will be built. But there is no Saggio Hills yet and I highly doubt they would want us, much less have to build their high end venture around a dog park ! Not there are no sites and no city money either.

Have their been proposed alternative locations? I am with Jim, I dont want to lose the park, butRead More their could be a more accessible location (where I could walk my dog to the park rather than driving her up the hill). And if it does relocate, where would the City find the funds to do so?
