In the Garden Patch

Growing Children Growing Gardens

HES/Healdsburg Charter School gardens full of life.

“If children are to care for the earth, then working and playing with the very stuff of existence is a priority.” David Hawkins Getting kids’ hands dirty is just one of the important tasks of the teacher-gardeners at the Healdsburg Elementary School/Healdsburg Charter School. The other jobs include teaching children, from kindergarten on, where their food comes from, the life cycles of insects and chickens, to identify plants, seeds and bugs, to graze in the garden and much more. Today, the 22 students in Vikki DuRee’s kindergarten class spread throughout the garden, some petting chickens, some picking snails off the vegetable plants to toss into the hen pen, some watching as Alison Garcia carryied a newly-hatched tomato hornworm moth. …

Occupy Groups Prepare to Protest Former Citi CEO at "Day of Shame"

Sonoma State University is awarding Sanford and Joan Weill an honorary degree for their $12 million donation to the school. But critics say Weill, the former CEO of Citigroup, is one of the "architects" of the financial crisis and is not an appropriate ch

Occupy groups, including Occupy Petaluma, are planning a “Day of Shame” at Sonoma State University's graduation Saturday to criticize the school for awarding an honorary doctorate for the former CEO of Citigroup who they say helped cause the economic crisis. An estimated 2,300 Sonoma State University students will graduate at
Saturday's 50th anniversary commencement ceremonies in Rohnert Park. Occupy groups are targeting former Citigroup CEO Sanford Weill who donated $12 million to the school’s new Green Music Center. While at Citigroup, Weill successfully lobbied to repeal the Glass Steagall Act, allowing banks to engage in risky investments. The reversal of the Depression-era ban on commercial banks investing depositors’ money opened the…

So some ideas. Yes, much higher taxes on the ultra rich (but be careful as moving money abroad is easy), stop the job losses abroad - does anyone really think China or wherever could afford the cheap labor if they had to use our worker safety standards and benefits), yes on health care (not Obama's - that's the best legislation the insurance companies could have written themselves), flatten the …   more ›

Protesters Skewer Sonoma State Honorary Degree, Vow No Graduation Disruption

Though some are against the university's decision to give honorary degrees to wealthy donors, many don't want their graduation ceremony disrupted.

Students are conflicted about a demonstration planned at Sonoma State University Saturday — at the same time that an estimated 2,300 students are graduating — to protest the university's award of an honorary doctorate degree to the Weills, who donated millions to the university's Green Music Center. A growing number of students have vetted concerns through social media, saying they're upset the cermony could be disrupted by protesters. However, organizers have defended the protest, saying it won't disrupt the ceremony. "It does not intend in any way to disrupt graduation proceedings," according to organizers — a coalition of Sonoma State faculty, students and local Occupy activists. "On the contrary, this is an urgent call to defend the …

HUSD Moves Ahead With Staff Cuts, Bond Measure

School district has $35 million bond extension question on June 5 ballot.

Healdsburg Unified School District will confirm cuts of the equivalent of 5.8 full-time teaching positions for the 2012-13 school year at a special meeting Wednesday. The meeting is set for 5 p.m. at the HUSD offices, 1028 Prince St. Superintendent Jeff Harding said the layoffs, tentatively approved earlier this year, were due to a shrinking student population at Healdsburg High School. "The senior class we're losing to graduation this year is a large class," Harding said. HUSD board members also are scheduled Wednesday to approve an underwriter for the proposed school bond measure on the June 5 ballot. If approved by voters, the measure would extend the current school bond debt term and generate $35 million for school facilities …

I'd like to see the schools open their doors for a walk-through prior to the election so that the community can see exactly where tax dollars will be spent. I see the information in my mailbox with "check marks" noting roof repair, science lab updates and so forth. Show me what is, and tell me what you are going to do, exactly. That is the only way I can make an informed decision.   more ›

Soroptimist Club Recognizes 'Most Improved' Students From Area Schools

Eight area students awarded certificates by Soroptimist Club.

Students, parents, educators and members of Soroptimist International of Healdsburg gathered on Wednesday to honor ‘most improved’ students from area schools. After a lunch of Mountain Mike’s pizza, salad and cookies, Soroptimist president Janice Torres awarded certificates to eight schools. The focus was on middle school students, though that meant different grades for different schools. The eight students represented fifth, sixth and eighth grade students. “We used to recognize high achievement,” said Soroptimist member Liz Thompson, “but the same students got all the recognition every time. “Someone suggested ‘why don’t we change to most improved because those students are often overlooked,’” she continued. “We started this form of …
