Veteran fitness and dance pro Jan Blalock hired as Healdsburg health club's group exercise and fitness director.
After a wide search, Parkpoint Health Club in Healdsburg has hired a popular Santa Rosa fitness and Zumba instructor as its new full-time group exercise and fitness director. Jan Blalock, who teaches Zumba two nights per week at the Santa Rosa Parkpoint Health Club, and Zumba, toning and strength classes at the private Montecito Heights Health Club in Santa Rosa on weekday mornings, started in the Healdsburg job April 3. She is continuing to teach 12 classes per week, while also working full time to strengthen the group fitness program at Parkpoint Healdsburg. Healdsburg Police issued an alert Tuesday to what they called "challenges associated with the annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and Parade." "This community celebration occurs over the Memorial Day weekend," said Healdsburg Police Lt. Kevin Young in a statement. "Festivities start with a parade through the downtown area on Thursday May 24 starting at 6 p.m. "The associated street closures begin at 5:30 p.m.," he added. "Vehicle access into the downtown area will be restricted for a minimum of two hours." Young encouraged drivers to select alternate routes to avoid the parade activity. Second stage starts in San Francisco.
Cyclist Peter Sagan is in the lead as the Amgen Tour of California moves to San Francisco today for its second stage. The Slovakian-born Sagan, riding for the team Liquigas-Cannondale, finished first in the annual race's first stage in Sonoma County on Sunday with a time of 4 hours, 42 minutes and 25 seconds. The 119.6-mile stage began and ended in Santa Rosa and traveled through the hills of western Sonoma County. The 117.1-mile second stage will begin at San Francisco's Marina Green at 11 a.m. and travel south on state Highway 1 through San Mateo County and ending in Aptos in Santa Cruz County, according to race organizers. More than 400 racers, 700 total attendees at Great Russian River Race.
An amazing 407 canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard racers took to the river Saturday for the Second Annual Great Russian River Race. "That's about 70 percent more than last year, when we had 251 racers," said Russian Riverkeeper Don McEnhill, one of the organizers. "We had 35 sign up first thing this morning." McEnhill said a buzz spread in the paddling community after the inaugural event last year. "What this race is really about is building community around the Russian River," said race director Tony Hansen. "This is a world-class river; it's one of the best to paddle in the world." Major cycling event starts in Santa Rosa.
Cities and residents across five Bay Area counties -- including Sonoma County -- are gearing up for one of the largest cycling races in America to make its way through their hometowns. Professional cyclists from across the world will kick off this year's Amgen Tour of California in the Bay Area, starting in Santa Rosa on May 13 and heading through San Francisco, the Peninsula, Santa Cruz County, San Jose, Danville and Walnut Creek before crossing the Stage 3 finish line in Livermore on May 15.
