Community Corner

Tuesday Concert Heads South for Latin Jazz

The second night of the Tuesday Concert in the Plaza gets underway today starting at 6 p.m. As has become traditional, the second Tuesday is a community concert from the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, this time with the Roger Glenn Latin Jazz Ensemble on stage.

Roger Glenn is a flutist, sax player and percussionist from New York, the son of the late trombonist Tyree Glenn, one of 57 notable jazz musicians photographed in the 1958 portrait “A Great Day in Harlem” by Art Kane. The senior Glenn played with Cab Calloway Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, among other legendary bandleaders.

But it was his mother who introduced Roger at an early age to Latin music and musicians such as José Fajardo, Johnny Pacheco, Eddie & Charlie Palmieri, and Celia Cruz. Now he’s a multi-instrumentalist who entertains and inspires on plays sax, flute, vibes, clarinet, oboe, and many Latin hand percussion instruments.

Other members of his Latin Jazz Ensemble include guitarist Ray Obeido, pianist Bob Karty, bassist David Belove, conguero Derek Rolando and drummer Phil Thompson. Come dance as the rhythm players conjure mighty grooves and  Glenn whips up a firestorm on his woodwinds, reeds or vibes.

Co-sponsoring this concert with Healdsburg Jazz Festival is Bear Republic Brewing Co. (See the full summer line-up here.)

As in previous years, food vendors will line Plaza Street with a variety of local favorites. They open at 5 p.m., and will include some if not all of the following: Healdsburg Charcuterie, diVine Pizza, Mateo’s Cocina Latina, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Sizzling Tandoor, Taverna Sofia and The Wurst.

In order to protect Plaza Park and ensure the enjoyment of the concert for everyone, the Healdsburg Parks and Recreation Department reminds everyone of the following rules:

• If you choose to set up chairs and blankets for the concert and leave them unattended, please do so after 4:00 p.m. on the day of the concert.
• Chairs and blankets left unattended prior to 4 p.m. will be removed.
• Please leave pets at home.

"Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy the concert!"
